Cat diapers while working full time?

Post by teresaborrego123 »

Hello, My cat Kitty is having incontinence issues due to mobility issues. I am thinking of using diapers for her, but im worried because I am out of the house from 6:30am-5:00pm.

I cant come home during lunch hour because of miami traffic means I wouldnt make it back on time. Any advice would be appreciated.

TBH that sounds like kind of a long time. Would it be possible to put her in the bathroom or laundry room while you're at work, and just plan to clean up when you get home? Or get an XL dog crate and fix it so she'll be comfortable? My cat is crated at night from about 10pm to 7:30am in a 48" x 30" wire crate, roomy enough for water, litter, a bed, and 2 dishes of food.

Could she use a low entry litter box? Here is an example.

If she's really having trouble getting around, I had a cat with a genetic mobility problem and I made her a crate with a recessed litterbox. In other words the entrance to the litterbox was level with the floor of her crate so she didn't have to step up. If you look at this link, the first photo shows a low entry litterbox, but you can see it is a 2" or 3" step up to get into it. The 8th picture shows the same box recessed in the floor of the crate for easier access.

What is the nature of her mobility problem? Do you think a low entry box would work for her?

The thing I was thinking is, you have different situations with different pets. You might get away with 10.5 hours once in a while (as an exception) if the pet wets 24/7, but the longer they're in a wet diaper the greater the chance of urinary tract infection or skin irritation. If your diaper kitty or diaper dog leaks 24/7, she is always in a damp diaper.

If your pet, for example, stays dry all morning, then wets in the afternoon, let's say at 1pm, then she is only in a wet diaper for 4 hours.

If you are going to try diapers, take one and pour water on it and see if the surface feels dry to the touch. If the water is absorbed inside the diaper and the surface is dry, you have a good diaper. If the surface feels damp, it will be wet against her skin and you have a problem.

Any feces inside the diaper for any time at all causes a risk of infection. You are safe to contain feces inside a diaper on male dogs because the urethra is so far from the tail. But with female dogs, and male and female cats, the opening of the urethra is up near the tail where fecal germs on the inside of a diaper may reach it.

:strobe: I’d go with Carol on this; urine scald is no joke. In a crate at least she can get away from it if she needs to.
