Meet Joy – A Gentle, Loving Special-Needs Dachshund Mix Looking for Her Forever Home

About Joy
Joy is a beautiful, resilient little dog whose name fits her perfectly. She was rescued from Texas after being found on the side of a highway with three broken legs. Despite this difficult beginning, Joy is sweet, loving, and gentle.
She grew up in rescue and foster care until she was adopted at around one year old. She has been deeply loved, and now she is looking for a home that can meet her special needs and give her the time and attention she deserves.
Personality and Temperament
• Affectionate and gentle with her people
• Has lived with children and has always been loving and patient
• Shy with strangers at first; she may bark and back up, but once ignored she will slowly approach for sniffs and affection
• Good with respectful dogs and enjoys play with familiar canine friends
• Excellent with calm, mature cats and does not bother them
• Tends to bark to announce visitors or excitement but settles down
Special Needs and Mobility
Joy is paralyzed in her hind end and has no feeling in her back legs. She requires care that includes:
• Diaper use and assistance due to incontinence
• A clean, safe space when left alone
• Limited physical activity to prevent soreness in her front paw
• Occasional use of a wheelchair, or supervised time outdoors where she can explore at her own pace
She loves being outside and will happily spend time with her person while they relax or garden. Her mobility challenges do not diminish her happiness or spirit.
Ideal Home
Joy would do well in:
• A family home with older, dog-experienced children
• A home with another friendly, gentle dog
• A single adopter who wants a quiet, loving companion
She may not be the best match for someone who would struggle physically with diaper changes, frequent laundry, or assisting her with mobility, though the right person could certainly manage her needs.
Training and Behaviour
• Easy to handle for diapering, lifting, putting on a harness, or using her wheelchair
• Tolerates nail trimming better with a dremel
• Has never shown aggression or bitten anyone
• Moderate barking, mainly for alerts or excitement
• Good manners in the home and settles in a safe, gated room when alone
• Knows “leave it” and responds well to gentle direction
• Well-behaved at the vet clinic
Health
• Spayed
• Minimal shedding
• No drooling
• No known allergies
• Regular flea/tick prevention
• Normal diet but enjoys healthy toppers and canned food
• Slightly behind on vaccines but overall in good health
• Has used glucosamine and chondroitin supplements in the past
Additional Notes
• Rides well in the car using a booster seat
• Not bothered by loud noises
• Tolerates baths in the sink
• Not currently using puzzle toys, but enjoys calm companionship and outdoor time
Who Joy Is Looking For
Joy needs an adopter with patience, understanding, and the willingness to care for a special-needs dog. She is incredibly loving and loyal, and she forms strong bonds with her people. She has overcome so much in her life, and now she simply needs a safe, stable home where she can be cherished.
